Now followed an exciting and dramatic time in the history of the British Isles. After a bloody civil war a political union was forged among the various peoples of the islands; they became the centre of the largest empire the world has ever seen. Industrialisation, the most revolutionary change in human productivity since the coming of agriculture, took place among them. The United Kingdom became the most powerful country in the world.
